Country Traditions and Family Values
Amaglen Limousin is a ranch built on the foundation of country traditions and family values. The whole family is involved in our Limousin operation, which has evolved since it’s beginning in 1982. However, the Hamilton's have been involved in purebred cattle since 1935.
Ian and Bonnie have significantly reduced their cow herd dispersing cows into some very influential purebred cattle herds across western Canada. This is a step towards retirement. However, Ian and Bonnie do continue to be involved in Amaglen as Amanda and Clint take on a larger role.
Amaglen Receives Platinum Elite Limousin Herd Status
The Canadian Limousin Association has developed a system to identify the herds that do total reporting of information for their animals and truly contribute to the advancement of the Limousin breed.
Amaglen Limousin has received the highest award, Platinum Elite. This is a herd that submits their birth weight, calving ease, weaning weight and docility numbers on every calf weaned. They also submit yearling weights, scrotal, ultrasound or carcass data. Only a select group of herds in Canada receive this distinction each year.
We are so very proud of this recognition as we have used only polled bulls since 1992 and have been a “numbers herd” collecting all weights from the start and docility scores on every calf since 1994. We have A.I.ed more than 700 cows and transplanted about 50 embryos. We pride ourselves in being leaders in breed improvement. Thank you, Canadian Limousin Association for this recognition.
Canadian Limousin Association Limousin Legacy
Amaglen fully embraced the CLA’s Limousin Legacy Program and have DNA tested all animals on the ranch.
The CLA partnered with Neogen Canada to offer this program that is delivering accurate genomically enhanced EPD’s backed by a parentage verified pedigree. By doing this DNA testing you can be guaranteed that all Amaglen pedigrees are accurate.
Canadian Limousin Association 2018 Award of Distinction
Each year the Canadian Limousin Association Board of Directors selects between one and three recipients of the Canadian Limousin Association Award of Distinction. Recipients are strong believers in the Limousin breed and length of involvement with the breed and breed promotion on local, provincial, national and international levels is considered when selecting for the award. Ian and Bonnie were honoured to be chosen to be the 2018 recipients.

Test Station Success
We tested bulls with the Manitoba Limousin Association at Rodger Mawer’s and Harry McKnight’s in the 1980s. We have had bulls at the Manitoba Bull Test Station every year since then. We are proud of our success at the bull test.
One of the biggest highlights in our test station success was in raising the highest indexing bull in the test station in 2003 over all breeds (550 bulls). Another highlight was in having the highest selling bull of all breeds (6 breeds, 110+ bulls) in 2016. We have sold many bulls to very accomplished commercial herds and we've had many bulls that have sold to other purebred breeders - this is very rewarding to us. We have sold bulls into Canada, the United States and Mexico.

The Manitoba Bull Test Station has also been ultrasounding for ribeye size. Amaglen Limousin has had the Largest Ribeye per 100 lbs. of all bulls on test (all breeds, 400+) several times. We are quite proud of this accomplishment.
Elite and Super Elite Limousin Dams
We, at Amaglen Limousin are very honoured to have had another female named to the Elite Dam list in 2017. Amaglen Zax HNH 24Z received this status. This accomplishment is especially rewarding as she has a homemade pedigree, out of what was the #1 cow for Milk in Canada.
Amaglen Limousin was very honoured to have received an award for having an Elite Limousin Dam in 2010. There were 19 cows in Canada (2 in Manitoba) honoured in 2010 and Amaglen Nice Girl HNH 75N received this recognition.
We are even more honoured to have had HNH 75N promoted to a Super Elite Limousin Dam in 2011. There were only 9 cows in Canada that met this criteria and we were the only Manitoba breeder to have a cow of this status.
This program used to be in place and we had the honour of having an Elite Dam in the 1990s. There were only about 20 in Canada at this time. She raised Hardball – one of the best bulls we ever raised and used. She was a 97% polled foundation female. However, the program had been discontinued for several years. In 2010, the program was reinstated to award high producing females in the Limousin breed. The award is based on the following criteria:
- Must be a fullblood, purebred or percentage registered Limousin female.
- Must have raised at least 4 calves in the last 6 consecutive years. For a Super Elite Dam, they need to have had 6 calves in the last 6 consecutive years.
- Must have above breed average EPD for Weaning Weight, Milk and Docility.
- Must have below breed average EPD for Birth Weight
We have had several cows over the years that have been titled trait leaders for calving ease, milk traits and performance.

4-H and the Junior Limousin Association
Our children came up through 4-H and the Junior Limousin Association. They exhibited heifers, steers, and continuation projects. They had many successes both in the show ring and out. Their involvement in these organizations helped them to learn the values and ethics that define us. The next generation are now doing the same.
We are proud to still have 4Hers selecting our genetics for their projects. Our hard work in selecting for docility shines here.

Performance, Pedigree and Personality
At Amaglen, we pride ourselves in raising quality seedstock that have performance, pedigree and personality.
- PERFORMANCE – We select our animals for performance. We aren't just concerned with weaning weights or yearling weights. We have bloodlines that have calving ease and milk numbers that could change a herd. Our success at the Manitoba Beef Performance Test has proven that our cattle are performance leaders.
- PEDIGREE – If you purchase an animal from us, we will transfer a registration guaranteed to be correct for that animal. Our pedigrees are the result of proven bloodlines. Countless hours are spent selecting both AI sires and prospective herd bulls.
- PERSONALITY – Our animals have been selected for docility from the beginning and we will not keep an animal with docility issues. We have zero tolerance for cattle with disposition issues – there is no room for them in our herd. We started collecting docility data before it was common place in Canada, when NALF introduced it. Ian was the Breed Improvement Chairman for the CLA and lobbied for and was successful in implementing the collection of docility numbers in Canada. This is something we believe strongly in at Amaglen.
Family, the ranch, and great Limousin cattle are our life. We cherish our friends in the cattle business and enjoy the opportunity to meet new people who share our passion.
